“Spirit Crossing Mississippi Refuge” was painted from the bluffs of the Wisconsin River looking north up the Mississippi Valley. This area has been a crossroad of goods and ideas in the American Midwest for pre-Colombian indigenous tribes for over a thousand years. The Effigy Mounds National Monument is located on the western bluffs of the Mississippi River. The negative spaces created by the bodies of water represent the metaphysical crossings of spirits through time.
