““Winter Forage” is a perspective study of two Eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo
silvestris) foraging through the snow as they move cautiously through a dense tangle of
underbrush. The random, overlapping geometric patterns of the thicket, combined with
the shifting contrast of light and shadow on the subjects, presented abstract visual
challenges that inspired the creation of this painting.
The exhibition’s 2026 theme, “American Perspective” aligns closely with this painting,
which is why I chose to submit it to the jury. A native Pennsylvania species, the Eastern
wild turkey was once considered for designation as our national bird. Nearing extinction
in the early twentieth century from deforestation and overhunting, it has rebounded
through dedicated conservation efforts. As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, the
Eastern wild turkey’s recovery symbolizes the resilience, perseverance, and renewal
that have long defined the American story.”
