Tom Holmes is an artist and sculptor working in stone, metal, wood, light, ice and water. He works seasonally tracking the weather, applying different materials to changing conditions. Holmes has developed many techniques over the last 20 years to create his ice sculptures. Holmes captures photographically his monumental steel and light embedded sprayed ice structures, too esoteric and intimate ice portraits.

This image titled, “Half Empty Heart”, was created in 2018. The piece was made using a steel mold  23″ x 18″ x 3″. Holmes used pigment, water, burnt wood and directed light to capture the image. It is a semi-solid construction. The liquid core is draining out of the central cavity as the photo was taken. The straight line across the center of the core is the waterline. Within 15 minutes, the hollow core was empty. This ice sculpture lasted approximately 24hrs.
