Nancy Palubniak: Artist Statement

My work responds to the natural world that surrounds me in northeastern PA. I walk the forest, along streams and ponds, and the environment that I see stimulates my thought process, which pushes me to research what I observe; this observation/research response creates a framework for my concepts.
Drawing and printmaking are the focus of my studio practice. I began collecting feathers that birds left behind in my garden and these eventually became a part of my printmaking process.  During covid I had time to closely observe the behavior of birds that visited the feeder and I noticed their strange, unusual twitching movements. Research led me to understand that a virus was spreading through many of the avian species, affecting their health and numbers. And the changes I observe which are occurring in the immediate environment and that are caused largely by human actions become prompts for new work.
