Marjorie Morrow
Marjorie Morrow is an abstract painter in NY’s Upper Delaware River Valley, relocating her studio there permanently in 2018 after fifty years in Manhattan. A graduate of Miami University, Oxford, OH, with a BFA in painting and printmaking, she participated, under visiting artist Richard Anuszkiewicz, at the first Blossom-Kent art program in Cleveland, OH. She has exhibited her paintings and prints since 1968.
“My paintings are abstract but they develop through inspiration from a variety of sources —music; literature; and the contemporary cultural, environmental, and political climates. Of course my work is also informed by the natural landscape as a reference for movement, line, and color. Whatever the source or inspiration, the element of chance is important to foster spontaneity and surprise. And color, with its many emotional nuances, is key! I began incorporating the frottage process of rubbings/relief into my paintings around 2011 often creating ‘rubbings’ from the actual bark of large pines on my property. I juxtapose textures of industrial, human-made grids with organic textures such as tree bark and, as a further contrast, I introduce a gestural hand-drawn element. In their mark-making and their application, the paintings relate to my earlier printmaking work, especially etching/intaglio and woodcut. I have always worked in series and in a variety of sizes and have created, over the years, more than 20 series of works. Titles are important to me and become a cohesive element for each piece.”
