Anne Thumann – Artist Statement
I draw continuous inspiration from the natural world, rich local history, and the cultural experiences gained through travel. My artistic journey began with portraiture, working in graphite, charcoal, and colored pencil—a practice I still hold dear. Over time, my focus has shifted toward creating original designs that come to life on apparel, home goods, and punch rugs.
My work is deeply influenced by the timeless principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, and particularly by designers such as William and May Morris and John Henry Dearle. I resonate with their commitment to simplicity, honesty in design, functional forms, clear construction, and the use of natural materials—values that guide both my creative process and the final form of my work.
Each of my designs begins by hand, using a variety of traditional mediums to explore form, texture, and color. I then digitize these pieces to prepare them for production on textiles and consumer goods. There’s something truly magical about bringing an idea to life—watching it evolve from a sketch into something tangible that people can live with, wear, or display in their homes.
In addition to printed textiles, I create original punch rugs using 100% wool yarn on a 100% cotton backing. Every rug is an expression of my original design work—crafted with care and rooted in tradition, yet made for modern spaces.
Through all of my work, I aim to blend historical influence with personal expression, creating art that is both beautiful and functional.
